Eight Bible studies for small groups which explore 1 and 2 Thessalonians, helping us to live in the light of Jesus' return.
Part of the Good Book Guides series.
We've been saved by Jesus…so what's next? How do we discern good teaching from bad, what does it look like to grow in holiness, and what should our expectations be for the future? Find answers to those questions in the warm, instructive letters Paul wrote to the Thessalonian church.
Pastor and professor Ligon Duncan unpacks these two letters verse by verse, teaching us about Christ's future return and showing us what it means to live in the light of that, whether we're new Christians, seasoned ministers of the gospel, or somewhere in between.
With thoughtful questions that help group members examine the text closely and apply it to their own lives, plus a substantial leader's guide, this is a great resource for small-group Bible studies.

We've used these Good Book Guides for a number of years for our lifegroups. They're a brilliant level of support for the leaders of those groups to have enough content to lead a session, with a good balance of more basic understanding questions and some deeper application questions. I would say that we never need all the questions available in the book, so normally spend an hour before the session choosing the ones which seem most relevant for our group and the ones which take us through the main points of the passage. These are also sold at a really affordable price meaning we can buy enough for every lifegroup leader to have a copy. Definitely recommended.
Ligon Duncan has done a fantastic job of unpacking 1 and 2 Thessalonians verse by verse, providing rich, deep, new understanding for the reader.
It has been a wonderful resource to help me dig a lot deeper into the meaning within each passage, not allowing me to overlook anything. It has been very profound.
This guide can be used either as a personal study guide or in a group. When done in a group setting there is a very helpful guide in the back to help guide discussion, allowing one to lead a session with minimal preparation (a real plus for those with busy schedules).
I recommend!
Thank you for providing this copy in exchange for my honest review.
I had the opportunity to review the book '1 & 2 Thessalonians For You' by Ligon Duncan, as well as the accompanying study titled '1 & 2 Thessalonians: In Light of His Return:
This book can be read as a stand alone resource, however, I would highly recommend utilizing the accompanying study guide to deepen your understanding and help you to grow in wisdom, as it is such a wonderful addition to the book.
I appreciate how the book opens up with a 'preface', which gives you a step by step outline of what to expect out of this book, as well as different options on how to use it.
This deep dive study of 1 & 2 Thessalonians teaches us what it means to live for Jesus. Ligon Duncan does a phenomenal job at unpacking 1 & 2 Thessalonians: verse by verse, while continually drawing us back to scripture.
The included guide is a fantastic addition, which allows this resource to be used in a group setting. It is structured well and broken down into 8 sections.
This is the first book I have read from Ligon Duncan, and I have been inspired by his writings.
Full of inspiration and biblical knowledge, this is a powerful tool for Christians to dig deeper into their understanding of God's Word.
I'm always on the look out for good biblical resources for my growing children to learn more about the Bible and grow in their relationship with God.
I have not had the opportunity to go through volume one of Engage 365, but this second volume is a wonderful option for teenagers to explore more about Christianity and their faith.
The book is meant to be completed every day for an entire year. The book explores Matthew, Romans, Joshua, Daniel, Psalm, Judges, 1 Timothy, Ruth, Job, 2 Timothy, Nehemiah, 1 Peter, Jonah, Esther, and 2 Peter.
The structure jumps around quite a bit through all of these books of the Bible. For example, the first 11 days will explore several chapters of Matthew, then move on to Romans, then it will hit Matthew again in days 54 to 69. This happens several times throughout the book.
Each day is formatted as follows:
- Intro statement or question
- Scripture Reading
- Engage your brain
- Think it through
- Scripture Reading
- Get on with it
Disclaimer: I must clarify that this is NOT a Bible. This is simply a Bible reading plan that chooses certain portions of the Bible to dig into. It's definitely a wonderful tool to help teenagers dig into the Word but it is not a replacement of the Bible itself.
Again, a wonderful addition to any teenager's tools in growing in their faith.

The God's Word For You series is so powerful and I have enjoyed every single one thus far. The guides are wonderful additions to the series that help to facilitate a group or academic study.
The study guide is structured with eight sections, each covering a specific chapter of first or second Thessalonians. This is different than the actual book where the chapters cover different passage sections of first and second Thessalonians. But, despite the difference, it's still a simple, easy to follow guide through the chapters.
There is included an introduction which provides basics about the structure of the guide. There is also a brief section on "Why study 1 and 2 Thessalonians" along with a helpful timeline of where Thessalonians lands in comparison to Creation and Christ's return.
The study guide portion is formatted with the following sections:
- Talkabout
- Investigate
- Explore More
- Apply
- Pray
The second portion is a guide for leader's. This guide is formatted with the following sections:
- The Big Idea
- Summary
- Optional Extra
- Guidance for Questions
Although the book can be read and completed without the study guide, it is very beneficial to complete the book alongside the guide in order to increase the level of wisdom and knowledge.
