If it looks like a Christmas book and if it sounds like a Christmas book, then it surely must be a Christmas book! But it’s even more than that. Let Earth Receive Her King shows us how the Christmas story explains God’s purposes from the dawn of time to the end of history. And it wouldn’t be an Alistair Begg book if it didn’t also show us how that story provides answers to the deepest needs of our hearts. Reading these pages will surely help all of us have a better Christmas. But I for one wouldn’t be surprised if it helps some readers have their best Christmas ever.
There’s no better or more faithful companion than Alistair Begg to widen your gaze and deepen your understanding so that you will be glad to ‘prepare Him room.’ These devotions are full of scriptural insight and refreshment that will enhance and enrich your Christmas season.
In this just-right book for daily reading during the Advent season, Alistair Begg presents the compelling story of the need for Jesus, the coming of Jesus, and the beauty of Jesus that runs from Genesis to Revelation.
I love how beautiful the cover of this book is, but even more so the rich gospel truths that pour from every page. Alistair writes in his familiar style of ease, clarity, and gospel-saturation. This is a great daily read for Advent as Alistair shares God’s redemptive story from Genesis through Revelation. This is everything you’d want and expect in an Advent devotional - Scripture, wisdom from a trusted theologian, reflection questions, and a hymn for each day’s reading. I got 2 days into reading this book before I ordered another copy to gift to a friend. It’s just that good! This will be a favorite for years to come.
The book is divided into 5 parts:
1. Christmas in the Beginning
2. Christmas in the Land
3. Christmas in the Gospels
4. Christmas in the Letters
5. Awaiting a New Advent
Each of these sections focuses on prophecies, promises, and fulfillments all culminating in the first and future comings of our Lord Jesus. If you’re looking for a way to focus your heart on our Savior this Christmas, read this book.
My Advent Devotionals are among some of my most favorite books that line my shelf and Allistair Begg’s, “Let Earth Receive Her King,” has certainly earned a spot among them.
I have looked forward to reading these insightful devotions every morning and love how Begg traces the story of Jesus from Genesis to Revelation in preparing our hearts not only for Christmas, but for Christ’s return.
Thank you, The Good Book Company, for my copy in exchange for an honest review.
How did God prepare for the birth of Christ? In Let Earth Receive Her King, Alistair Begg helps you prepare your heart for Christmas Day. With 24 Advent devotions, Begg takes you on a journey across the whole of Scripture to help you better see Jesus. His writing is refreshing and hopeful.
Fulfillment
I most appreciated how Begg spends time in the Old Testament. He is able to bring up allusions and prophecies that point to and find their fulfillment in Jesus. Begg does not lose sight of Jesus’ heritage. Israel’s history is on full display, and I was delighted with a fuller and clearer picture of the Messiah.
Freedom
“Let Earth Receive Her King” is a wonderful companion for the Christmas season as you embrace the hope and freedom of Christ’s arrival. This book not only deepens your understanding of Jesus but also enriches your celebration of his birth. Let your heart prepare him room with renewed joy and reverence.
I received a media copy of Let Earth Receive Her King and this is my honest review.
This Advent devotional by Alistair Begg features short daily readings that explore the Christmas story in its full biblical context, from Genesis to Revelation. Each reading is about four to six pages long, and they all begin with a Bible verse. Begg explains what each verse means, frequently making connections with other Scripture passages as well, and he shares hope-filled encouragements and practical applications for his readers. Each devotion concludes with thoughtful reflection questions, and then with the lyrics of a traditional Christmas carol that fits with that day's theme.
This book stands out because of its whole-Bible approach to the Christmas story. The first ten readings set the stage by exploring key plot points and themes from the Old Testament, and then Begg spends several readings on the gospel accounts of Christ's birth. After that, he explores related themes from the New Testament letters, and writes about prophecies in Revelation about Jesus's second coming. The book concludes with a final reading for after Christmas.
"Let Earth Receive Her King" is well-written and encouraging, and the book is also very aesthetically pleasing. This is a cloth-bound hardcover with gilded accents, and it has thick cream pages, a sturdy sewn binding, and a ribbon bookmark. This is a beautiful object that is full of glorious truths and hopeful messages, and it will appeal to Christians who are looking for a deep, thoughtful, and gospel-focused Advent devotional.
I received a free copy from the publisher, and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Christmas is only 70 days until Christmas and in my opinion it never too soon to plan what and how you can bring in the advent season.
Let Earth Receive Her King by Alister Begg is a great book to help focus on the true meaning of Christmas. I love how Alister starts in the beginning of the Bible with Genesis and then proceeds through revelation. It focuses on Jesus rather than just the season of Christmas. This would be a great book to gift to parents, siblings or friends. I haven’t finished the book but I look forward to finishing in December.♥️
Thank you to @thegoodbookcompanyusa for this book in exchange for my honest review.
This lovely Advent reading takes you through the whole of the metanarrative of Scripture, weaving in the beauty of the gospel through the promises of the past, the fulfillment in Jesus, and the hope of the future.
I love that it addresses the post-Christmas blues in a manner that reminds of us hope.
Thank you for my gifted copy in exchange for an honest review. Really looking forward to diving deeper in the advent season!
What a beautiful devotional book for Advent! Thank you to @TheGoodBookCompanyUSA for the gifted book. I can't wait to more fully dive in to this this season. But I have done some selective reading to get a feel for this book and have to share it with all of you!
This book is divided into five sections:
Christmas in the Beginning
Christmas in the Land
Christmas in the Gospels
Christmas in the Letters
Awaiting a New Advent
And each section helps walk you through another part of the Bible to show how the Christmas story is woven into all of scripture from beginning to end. Each day's reading includes a couple of pages of wisdom and guidance on how to think about a verse ties into to the Christmas story, and ends with a question for personal reflection and a carol or hymn for you to sit with.
This book is beautifully written and in just a few pages each day packs a punch in what you gain in insight and focus on the Christmas story and God's plan for us through Jesus. I think you will be blessed if you pick up this devotional to read this upcoming Advent season!
You might be thinking it’s too soon to be recommending a Christmas devotional, but December is only 15 weeks away! Now is the perfect time to be thinking about what advent book will draw you “to the awe-inspiring truth,” instead of allowing “familiarity with the Nativity scene to breed complacency.”
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). This may not be the way you expect a Christmas devotional to begin, but this devotional traces the Christmas story from Genesis to Revelation; for it is important to remember that “the child in the manger was the very same person who put the stars in the sky.”
I love Alistair Begg’s devotionals. I am currently reading Truth for Life: Volume Two, so this was a delightful additional daily reading. There are 25 daily readings, each averaging about 4 pages (perfect length), that contain questions for reflection as well as a hymn or Christmas carol. This devotional was a great reminder of God’s undeserving grace towards us, and the beautiful rescue plan that started before Genesis. You will feel convicted to focus your attention on: “Are you ready for Jesus?” instead of, “Are you ready for Christmas?” Our eyes should always be on our deliverer, our hope and peace, who is deserving of our praise, love, devotion, and obedience.
Alistair Begg has a way of packing so much truth into brief daily readings that still convict and make you think deeply. Various scripture references, examples from his own life, historical references, and thought-provoking questions are found throughout this devotional. The book itself, with its gold foil stamped cover, is beautiful and would make the perfect gift any time of year.
*I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This daily devotional is a great way to get into the spirit of the Advent season. The readings are easy to understand and bring out the joy and hope of Christmas. Plus, the book itself is absolutely stunning, with a beautiful hard cover, gold foil embossing, and a ribbon marker—always a delight to find when opening a book. It’s a perfect pick for anyone wanting to feel closer to the true reason for the season.
Another great option to prepare our hearts and minds for the Christmas season.
Begg structures the book with five parts:
Christmas in the Beginning
Christmas in the Land
Christmas in the Gospels
Christmas in the Letters
Awaiting a New Advent
As you can tell by the sub-titles, Begg reveals the Christmas message through all of Scripture, from the Old Testament to the New Testament. I appreciate the depth of tying the entirety of Scripture to Christ and culminating with His second coming. We often leave the Old Testament behind, forgetting that it sets the entire stage for Christ’s redemptive plan for all believers.
Each devotional begins with a Scripture reference, followed by Begg’s discussion of the scripture and how it reveals the truth of Jesus. Then each concludes with a reflection piece that includes a question and a song or prayer.
I enjoyed Begg’s in depth yet simple dive into Scripture. Despite being a quick read, each day will prepare your heart and mind to be in a constant worshipful state throughout the holiday season.
