In Jeff Medders’ The Risen King, we have the opportunity to taste Charles Spurgeon’s writings as renewed wine in new wineskins. These fresh devotionals have a high trinitarian focus and enable us to worship God in Spirit and truth while clearly pointing to Jesus, our Redeemer. Medders masterfully regenerates Spurgeon’s voice with a tone refreshingly asserting that Spurgeon still speaks to us today.

Author, Growing in Gratitude

The Risen King is an incredibly edifying devotional whether read during the Easter season or any other time. Jeff Medders has done a masterful job of extracting jewels of gospel saturated, thought provoking and poignantly clear doctrine from the enormous collection of Charles Spurgeon’s sermons. What a joy to be reminded in such sweet, rich and heartfelt admonitions from the well-named Prince of Preachers how our daily lives must be overflowing with sheer gratitude for the matchless work of Christ. I am already looking forward to the companion volume, The Newborn King.

“A wonderful Easter devotional that is Christ-centered!”

(Review written for 'The Risen King')

If you are looking for an Easter devotional for this new year, look no further!

The Risen King by C.H. Spurgeon is a compilation of Spurgeon's sermons from long ago that speak of Jesus' life, passion, death and resurrection. Each devotion is bite sized and gospel focused. This Christ-centered devotional takes readers through different passges of Scripture that tell the Easter story. J. A. Medders did a wonderful job compiling these sermons to make an Easter devotional. I am throughly enjoying this read and plan to come back to it at Easter and read through it more slowly. I love the reflection questions at the end of each devotional and the sample prayer to help guide you in your own prayer. This is a 40 day devotional, so it would be perfect to start in early March and work through each day leading up to Easter. Joel Beeke's endorsement of this book made me even more excited to read it and it is truly an edifying read. Whether you are farmiliar with Spurgeon or not, it is sure to help prepare your heart for Easter.

“Deep, Fresh Perspective”

(Review written for 'The Risen King')

The Risen King: 40 Devotions for Easter is a treasure for anyone wanting to immerse themselves in the beauty and significance of Christ’s resurrection. Drawing from the timeless wisdom of C.H. Spurgeon, each devotion provides a powerful blend of Scripture, theological insight, and heartfelt reflection that points readers back to the risen Savior.

As someone who loves celebrating Easter as the cornerstone of our faith, I found this book to be both deeply encouraging and spiritually grounding. The devotions are beautifully concise yet packed with rich truths, making them perfect for personal quiet time or family readings during the Easter season.

What I particularly loved is how Spurgeon’s words challenge and inspire, offering fresh perspectives on familiar passages while keeping the focus squarely on Christ’s victory over sin and death. The accompanying prayers and reflections make it easy to connect these truths to daily life, cultivating a heart of gratitude and worship.

If you’re looking for a meaningful way to prepare your heart for Easter or simply want to deepen your understanding of the gospel, The Risen King is a wonderful companion. It’s a timeless resource I’ll return to year after year. Highly recommended!
