Description

Read the true story of Susannah Spurgeon, the wife of British pastor Charles Spurgeon.

Susannah was married to a very gifted and busy preacher, who could not have done all he did without her support. Susie experienced poor health for much of her life but she did not let that stop her from serving. One key way that she served the wider church was by creating the Book Fund, which gave free copies of Charles' books to poor pastors who could not afford to buy them.

This beautifully illustrated children's biography of Susannah Spurgeon (1832-1903) features stylish illustrations and extra facts at the back, including a biographical timeline with historical photos. It is part of a series designed to show kids that God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things.

Download free extras, such as worksheets, to help children interact with the true story and think of ways in which they can also follow God and encourage his people today.

These stories can be read to young children or enjoyed independently by early readers. The free extras make these stories useful for homeschool, Sunday school, missions events, and more.

In every age and of every age, followers of Christ are spiritually enriched by studying the lives of great Christians of church history. As a father of five, I personally know the benefits of planting those seeds as early as possible. That’s why I’m delighted to see Mary Mohler produce this children’s book, Susannah Spurgeon: The Pastor’s Wife Who Didn’t Let Sickness Stop Her. Susannah Spurgeon’s story is a great one to tell, and Mary Mohler is a great author to tell it. I heartily recommend this book to parents and pastors, as well as churches and children’s’ ministries.

I love this book for many reasons. I love kids getting to know not only about Charles Spurgeon, but that God gave him a wife that helped him have such a fruitful ministry. That is such a great role model for our girls as future wives and mothers. But also, as a pastor’s wife, who has daily health struggles like Susannah Spurgeon, I love that this book highlights how God does great things even in those who struggle with much weakness. It's personally been how God has testified to His greatness in my life. And I love for kids to see that God does not just use the powerful and the very able, but he delights to be glorified in the very weak who he gives grace to do the many good works he even has prepared them. There is no one who God saves that he does not use. And sometimes in ways far more than they could ever imagine.

Susannah Spurgeon is a wonderful example for young girls to aspire to. In her book, Mary captures Susannah's spirit of love, devotion, and determination to use her life for good, even when life is hard.

“The spotlight is on the wife of the Prince of Preachers”

(Review written for 'Susannah Spurgeon')

This is a fresh installment of a great series. Now the spotlight is on the wife of the Prince of Preachers, Charles Spurgeon, Susannah or Suzie. Charles Spurgeon may be a towering figure in Christianity but he is not alone in his mission to bring people to Christ. Overshadowed, Susannah was there and that’s what this book is all about.

We all know that this is geared for kids but how this book was written it feels like for adults. If it’s not for the format, this would have been a short book for grown ups and a good reference book, LOL. So far this is the most serious book in the series. Probably because of the mention of sickness and death. This sets the vibe that even the illustrations wouldn’t make it light or kid friendly. The artwork is good and

Of course, kids would love (like I do) the part where Suzie helped Charles with a book fund ministry while she was sick. For me that got me. Overall the book showed how Suzie made an impact on her husband’s ministry which sometimes puts her out of the spotlight.

My verdict:

4.5 of 5

“An inspiring and fun way to teach biographies to our youngsters.”

(Review written for 'Susannah Spurgeon')

This is another wonderful addition to the “Do Great Things for God” series. We enjoy these short picture books as a way to learn about missionaries.

This series always has beautiful illustrations and this one is no exception. They take a story and make it accessible for children with an emphasis on how God works in their lives. Each book includes a real life photo and timeline of the missionary which is ever so helpful. This book also includes questions at the end and additional free resources for interacting with Helen’s story. The homeschool mom in me loves these mini lessons!

“Inspiring Story for Little Ones”

(Review written for 'Susannah Spurgeon')

Another great addition to the Do Great Things for God series. This book makes the beautiful story of Susie Spurgeon engaging for young readers. There are questions in the back of the book to use and free printables on the publisher's website. Highly recommend this series for introducing your children to faithful Christians in history.

“Godly example for our children”

(Review written for 'Susannah Spurgeon')

Susannah Spurgeon's life story is a great example for your children to be introduced to.

By her example, your children will learn that even though you may not be able to perform extraordinary physical feats you can still be used by God to do other amazing things.

Susannah Spurgeon was her husband's biggest fan and with her encouragement and prayer, he was able to keep going and preaching when times were tough.

I'm so glad that she was able to support him in this way as Charles' books and commentaries have made an impact in people all over the world.

I would highly recommend this book to any Christian family. This would also be a great addition to any homeschooling family wanting to study past heroes of the faith.

“Our family LOVES these!!”

(Review written for 'Susannah Spurgeon')

Another wonderful installment in the Do Great Things for God series!
The story of Susannah Spurgeon is told succinctly, yet powerfully. She was a woman who faced personal and physical challenges, and yet she didn’t allow them to deter or discourage her dependence on God. Her life is an example of trust and conviction, marked by her love for her husband and her work alongside him for the Gospel. Our family just loves these books and my 4-year-old is always asking for more!

Thank you to GoodBookCompany for the complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed are completely my own.

“Inspiring!!!”

(Review written for 'Susannah Spurgeon')

This is a bite-size biography picture book about Susan Spurgeon (1832-1903). Susan’s friendship with Charles grew as he helped her to understand how amazing our God is. She became a Christian and soon married Charles. She spent her days serving God and caring for her family. But she became very sick. She prayed for strength and work. Although she was too sick to leave home, God used her even in her weakness.

As a girl mom, I want to introduce my girls to women like Susan Spurgeon, who remained steadfast in their devotion to God, even in times of illness. Susan serves as a remarkable role model, encouraging our girls to use their time wisely and serve God faithfully.

“Our favourite way to learn about church history!”

(Review written for 'Susannah Spurgeon')

The "Do Great Things for God" is one of our family's favourite series, so we were super excited to know another new book was coming out!

Susannah Spurgeon's story was truly inspiring and encouraging, not just to our children but also to myself! As a Christian homeschooling mother with a husband in ministry, I can relate to some of the things Susie would do to support her husband and family. I was particularly struck by Susie's faithfulness in her ordinary work (which in fact were extraordinary for the glory of God!) even when she was limited by sickness. Her continued trust in God and the way she looked out for others in her limited capacity challenged me to reflect with my children how we might serve Jesus in our different seasons.

The questions at the back of the book were super helpful in our discussions, and we always enjoy looking at the photo and map after the story, and really appreciate the additional worksheets that help us dig deeper into her story. We love learning about history/ church history this way!

Note: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

“Wonderful Testimony for Children to Read”

(Review written for 'Susannah Spurgeon')

Like many Christians, I was overly familiar with Charles Spurgeon but not as much with his wife, Susannah. However, I recently read a few things about how influential she was on Charles and really helped him ( behind the scenes) in his ministry.

I love introducing my girls to Christian leaders, especially women who lived faithfully for Christ. My seven-year-old daughter helped me review this book, and she said, "It was great; I really liked learning how you can serve God right where you are!"

The book was very informative, but easy to read, with cute illustrations. Love this series !

“Fantastic for children & adults!”

(Review written for 'Susannah Spurgeon')

Looking for something to read to your kids that will inspire them to do great and mighty things for the Lord? Meet Susannah Spurgeon, pastor’s wife to the famed Baptist preacher, Charles Spurgeon.

Not only was she a busy mom to twin boys, Susannah served along her husband at their church and when she became sick and could not get out of bed to minister, she prayed God would give her an idea of how to serve others from her bedroom.

Well, God did. And so Susannah started a book fund that sent and gave free books to pastors all over the country. She even provided clothing and shoes to some families, too.

This beautifully illustrated children’s book tells her story and how she reached souls even when she couldn’t physically leave her home.

She is an inspiration to us all and especially to me!

My kids loved this book so much! And now they know another Christian woman (and couple) who served the Lord faithfully and dedicated so much of their time and resources to God. I recommend this entire series {see last picture} for children, especially young girls and families that want to learn about Godly women in history that God used, even in their weakness.
